LEAN LEARNING

Lean learning is a process to achieve a learning outcome in the shortest possible timeframe, using the least amount of learning content and utilising habit science to facilitate the application of knowledge in the work environment after the learning intervention.

Lean learning is predicated on the following: what happens before and after a learning event is as important as what happens during a learning event.

Lean learning proactively engages learners in the three stages of the learning process

• Before -   Pre learning event

• During -   Learning event

• After    -   Post learning event

PRE-LEARNING EVENT ACTIVITIES

Obtain buy-in
Engagement between the learning facilitator and staff prior to the development of learning content to sell the benefits of learning, build trust and obtain buy-in for a future learning event.  This is achieved by hosting a meet and greet event so staff can meet the learning facilitator in advance of course attendance.

Seek input
A request for staff to identify specific barriers and enablers they face in their workplace concerning the proposed theme of the learning event e.g. change management, optimising teamwork, engaging in difficult conversations, managing conflict, delivering feedback, enhancing psychological safety, utilising critical thinking, eliminating micro-management…

Create lean learning content
Lean learning content is created to address barriers and enablers identified by staff/management/learning facilitator during the learning needs analysis.  The content form is condensed and orientated towards practical application in the workplace.

Identify post learning event supports
In addition to utilising habit science to effect knowledge application post learning events, other supports are reviewed and selected that will increase the likelihood knowledge transfer to the work environment.

Pre learning event task
Staff are asked to complete a pre learning task related to the theme of the learning event.  This can be a reflective exercise, a specific challenge, or a review of reading material/video content

LEARNING EVENT ACTIVITIES

Host lean learning event
The learning event shares practical content that addresses the specific issues identified during the learning needs analysis.  The learning environment created by the facilitator is positive, supportive and challenges learners to robustly evaluate the content presented.

In addition, lean learning content is demonstrated or explored in a manner to allow learners understand how it can be applied in a work environment.

The conclusion of the learning event utilises implementation intentions theory to encourage staff to take ownership of their learning and to commit to its application in the work environment

POST LEARNING EVENT ACTIVITIES

Post event supports deployed
Specific options identified and agreed to facilitate the application of knowledge in the workplace after the learning event are deployed.

Gather evidence of knowledge application
Various options can be used to establish if knowledge transfer has occurred, such as surveys, data reviews, interviews.  Information gathered is analysed, conclusions are documented and recommendations are offered.

Implement remedial actions as required
If required implement remedial actions to enhance knowledge application in the workplace.

LEAN LEARNING CONTENT

Lean learning materials focus on a single topic that explain a concept and give guidance on how the knowledge of the subject matter can be practically applied in the work environment.

Lean learning materials can be short videos or text documents with supporting info-graphics to aid understanding and the recall of content.

Learning content in a lean format condenses learning materials so they can be quickly understood and bridge the gap between theory and practice.
