A learning environment that adopts the principles of emotional intelligence leads to an emotionally intelligent learning environment.

Key principles of emotional intelligence that can be harnessed in both the learning and work environment are:

  • Self awareness

  • Self motivation

  • Focus

  • Emotional management under stress

  • Adaptability

  • Empathy

  • Relationship management

  • Social competence

  • Team work

  • Collaboration

  • Influence

Training delivery that utilises emotional intelligence enhances learner engagement, the learning experience and learning outcomes.

What specific actions can be taken to create an emotionally intelligent learning environment?

LEARNING FACILITATOR

The learning facilitator ensures that they engage emotionally intelligent behaviours to rapidly build trust and rapport with their learners.

Emotionally intelligent behaviours include:

  • Engaging a heightened sense of self awareness of how the learning facilitator's demeanor impacts on the learning experience e.g. positivity, enthusiasm, adaptability

  • Engaging reciprocal empathy to ensure the learner needs are prioritised

  • Constantly applying the empathy triad of cognitive empathy, affective empathy and empathetic support to ensure high levels of learner engagement

  • Applying the psychology of influence to enhance learner engagement

  • Acknowledgment of learners by creating a welcoming environment

  • Attention focused on learners, utilising the language of "you" not "I"

  • Actively listening to learners. Listening with patience, listening non-judgmentally, listening to recall content for future discussions, listening to understand

  • Constant observation of learners to decode feedback.

LEARNERS

Learners can be encouraged to embrace emotionally intelligent behaviour to maximise their learning experience.

Emotionally intelligent behaviours for learners include:

  • Increasing their own level self awareness, reducing their blind spots and realising how their behaviour impacts on their fellow learners and the learning atmosphere

  • Encouraging learners to apply reciprocal empathy to ensure high levels of collaboration with their fellow learners

  • Utilising the empathy triad of cognitive empathy, affective empathy and empathetic support to ensure high levels of collaboration and reduce conflict

  • Paying attention to their fellow learners, being present, avoiding distractions.

  • Actively listening to their fellow learners. Listening with patience, listening non-judgementally, listening to recall content for future discussions, listening to understand.

  • Constant observation of their learning colleagues to decode feedback.
